Negative Effects of Social Media on Teenagers and Youth

Both good and bad things have come from social media in our lives. When it comes to the negative effects, teenagers and young people are particularly affected.

There are several reasons why social media has a negative effect on our children and all teenagers. More information about the negative effects of social media on teenagers and young people will be provided below.

Negative Impact/ Effects of Social Media on Youth and Teenagers

  • Lack of Interest in Studies: As we can see, children like using a variety of social media tools and believe that these are the real sources of delight and pleasure. They constantly keep an eye out for new products on the market. Teenagers are not studying as a result, which is sad in and of itself. Because of the regular usage of these social gadgets, our youth are becoming less interested in their schoolwork. There is no question that our parents and teachers, who are unable to ignore the growing usage of social media, are equally to blame.

Lack of interest in intellectual pursuits is the most dangerous global trend currently present. The wonderful thing is that parents don't think it's bad for their kids. How will the nation advance if its children don't pursue intellectual interests? Therefore, we can draw the conclusion that these gadgets are killing our children's spirit.

Following of Unknown FriendshipTeenagers who watch a variety of dramas, movies, and plays are now more eager to meet new people. Regardless of whether the individual is older than them, they simply strive to reproduce the same circumstances that they frequently encounter on social media. The teenager has no idea what dimension they are in as they are floating. They are only setting themselves up for failure. These friendships could seem alluring at first, but as you get to know them, they wind up being deadly.

  • Lack of Interest in Family Gathering: The custom of extending a greeting to visitors has all but disappeared. Parents frequently ask their children to come out of their rooms to meet a visitor or sit with him. In order to avoid gathering, they are unwilling to step out and offer flimsy justifications. Kids who think attending family reunions is a waste of time experience this. They aim to use social media the majority of the time. Our young people try to hide themselves in their rooms while they act like they're studying. They actually believe that going to these events is foolish. The parents who fail to realize that their kids aren't interested in sitting close to them bear the majority of the responsibility for this predicament, in my opinion.

  • Increase in Need of Luxuries/Facilities: Teenagers desire to have the amenities and privileges that other people have when they see them. They make every effort to mimic and adapt what they see in dramas and movies. They make their parents uncomfortable by demanding expensive items from them, which is outside of their means. The fact that their parents had to spend a lot of money on such goods makes them feel helpless as well.

  • Rude attitude with parents: Due to their lack of regard for their parents and elders, teenagers who use social media are becoming disrespectful towards them. They observe various movie characters belittling and disobeying adults. Thus, the impression is created in their minds that defying orders and treating others disrespectfully is acceptable and even fashionable. Being rude to others, especially the guardians, has recently become fashionable.

  • Fearless Attitude: The most concerning development for us is how brave our young generation is becoming. Due to the diverse roles that are shown in our dramas and movies, they tend to do things their own way and disobey their parents. The behavior of our youth has been corrupted by movies and social media. In the pursuit of adventure, they commit terrifying acts. By telling their acquaintances about their events, they attempt to gain notoriety. All of this is done merely to give the impression that they are strong and brave, which ultimately puts them in the worst possible predicament.

  • Influence of Wrong Personalities: Our social media plays and movies include strong, compelling characters that may easily draw in any spectator. They persuade the younger generation to alter their lifestyle so that it appears more cutting edge. The key figures perform the poorest for children. Teenagers put themselves in the shoes of the heroes and begin to think like them when they observe their way of life. They should thus imitate their way of life, including their manner of wearing, speaking, and spending money.

  • Superiority and Inferiority Complex: Children that use social media frequently develop superiority and occasionally inferiority complexes. Teenagers can believe they are more knowledgeable and understanding than other people. Since they believe they are more linked to society thanks to social networks, they do not believe anyone is more intelligent or effective than they are. They thereby acquire a sense of superiority.

On the other hand, some youngsters believe they lack the ability to obtain what others possess and that they are inferior to others since they do not use social media as freely or as extensively as others. They feel ashamed when they see their pals spending extra money on parties and new, pricey mobile phones with a lot of features that they post on Facebook or Instagram.

The kids contrast their way of life with that of their pals. They may experience an inferiority complex as a result, and they may also feel disheartened.

  • Women Harassment: Sexual harassment of women has increased as a result of social media. Teenagers watch a range of plays and films on how women are mistreated. The media portrayals of men and women in these plays give viewers a very comfortable feeling while the woman are being kidnapped, teased, and treated with contempt (physically or morally) teenagers consequently try to apply the same in their lives. The boy holler and scream at any girl they see in the street. The females feel exposed and uneasy as a result. If the issue is severe, there can be of cases of female rape. Boys act in this way to feel more manly. They believe they are the real-life enemies of television shows, films, and video games.

  • Increased Cases of Crimes: Social media has led to an upsurge in street crimes, robberies, and kidnapping instances. Teenagers watch individuals commit crimes in dramas with perfect freedom and no one is following them. They believe they will devise the ideal crimes. They consequently apply the same to them. After having such severe negative effects on our childhood, these variables are highly harmful. Additionally, it makes their family members uncomfortable and ashamed.

  • Copying Super Heroes in Real Life: Teenagers are shown psychologically to be more influenced by their surroundings. They mimic and replicate others. They are easily drawn to the heroes shown in films and then make several attempts to imitate them. Their physical characteristics, way of life, and way of speaking are altered. By imitating well-known superstars, they believe they would become the actual heroes. They never attempt to consider that the supports and circumstances for those heroes might be different. They only know how to imitate many well-known heroes. The girls are experiencing the same thing. They attempt to imitate the outfits worn by movie stars. Teenagers begin to imagine themselves to be great celebrities and live in a fantasy world.

  • Increased Demand for Money: Teenagers attempt to live a life of luxury as they observe their friends doing so. They pester their parents and demand money from them. Parents are compelled to arrange for money by them. With all this content on social media platforms, the goal is to flaunt. In other cases, if their demand for money is not answered, they will steal things from their homes. Kids go over their bounds and begin stealing to fulfil the urge and boost their self-esteem. They disregard the distinction between good and wrong and choose to fulfil their needs instead.
